Roof Repair and Reconstruction
St Briavel’s Castle, a scheduled Ancient Monument in the care of English Heritage has C12th origins but had suffered from inappropriate alterations, partly as a consequence of its recent use as a youth hostel. In particular a C20th concrete and asphalt flat roof over the former Great Hall was leaking. Hook Mason designed its replacement using lead and timber in a manner sympathetic to the original structure. The work included the repair of roof trusses damaged by beetle attack and in order to avoid disruption to occupied rooms and moulded ceiling beams stainless steel plates were inserted into the roof trusses from within the roof void.
